French Regions

French Regions is just one more app in the category “Regional geography”. The only distinct feature is case of France is that there are 5 overseas regions that must be shown on separate maps. Luckily, I already had contour maps of Africa, South America, and the Caribbean due to my previous apps.

The English description of the game is the following:

Learn all 27 Regions of France: 22 in Metropolitan France (Normandy, Burgundy and others) and 5 overseas regions (French Guiana, Guadeloupe).
* names
* maps
* capitals
* flags

*****
When I was working on this app, I realized that it should be done a week before to be released exactly for the Bastille Day (July 14). This idea came too late and the app was released on July 18. Better late than never.

Russian Leaders

Russian Leaders is my new app that has one important feature that I never tried before: it’s default language is Russian, i.e. it is shown in Russian in all non-localized Stores. The app itself may be called an answer to my previous and quite successful app about US Presidents. In case of Russian and Soviet leaders, it is not straightforward to build a definite list of names. There are many insignificant Grand Princes or Tsars who ruled for just a couple of years. So I finally chose 28 leaders with a possibility to add several more if the app is doing well.

The English description of the game is the following:

Check your knowledge of the Russian and Soviet history! This app has portraits and additional info about 28 most important Russian leaders – Peter the Great and Joseph Stalin, Ivan the Terrible and Mikhail Gorbachev. Can you guess them all?

100 English Nouns

100 English Nouns is another simple app about words that I created following the relative success of English Irregular Verbs. It took some time to choose the topic, and I chose the most basic set of words I could imagine. These are not the most frequent words of English language (“the”, “is”, “it” – it’s hard to find an interesting questions about them), so I limit myself to nouns only and I found that there is no one authoritative list of English words in order of their frequency. Finally, I combined several of such lists and substituted some common but too abstract nouns to well-known words such as “cat”, “stone”.

The English description of the game is the following:

This app is for everyone! Learn 100 most frequently used English nouns. The app has 3 modes:
* guess the word from its definition
* translate the word from Spanish
* flashcards: word – definition – Spanish translation

*****
The first mode is the same in all languages: guess an English noun from its definition in English. The second mode is to translate a foreign noun into English. If the user’s language is already English or it is a language I don’t localize into, the second mode is translations of Spanish words since Spanish is the most popular foreign language in the US.

Famous Operas

I continue create apps on the topics I like and know relatively well. Please, ladies and gentlemen, welcome Famous Operas.

The English description of the game is the following:

For all opera fans! Demonstrate your knowledge of the 50 most performed operas by the most important opera composers. The app has 3 game modes:
* guessing the opera from its poster
* guessing the composer from the portrait
* find the correspondence between the title of an opera, the name of a composer, an opera poster, and a composer’s portrait

Please contact me at asmolgam@gmail.com if you want to see your favorite opera in the updated version of this app.

*****
It was surprisingly time-consuming to find good-looking posters for all operas. In case of “Wozzeck”, for example, I just dropped it, but how can I miss “Il Trovatore” in the app called “Famous Operas”? On the other hand, portraits of composers are easy to find.

German States

I continue my series about the regional geography. Today let’s welcome German States. In terms of revenue from my apps, Germany is the third country after the United States and Russia. And everyone has heard about Bavaria and Bremen.

The English description of the game is the following:

Learn all 16 States of Germany: Bavaria, Brandenburg, Berlin and all others.
* names
* maps
* capitals
* flags
* coats of arms

National Parks of US – Guess the Park Quiz

In summertime, the app about the US National Parks seems to be appropriate.

Concordia University Online Nebraska wrote a very positive review of this app: http://online.cune.edu/national-parks-app-review/ and I hope that you’ll enjoy it as well.

The English description of the game is the following:

Guess all 59 US National Parks either from its photo or from the map.
Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and 56 more parks!
Demonstrate your knowledge of the American wilderness and prepare for the new adventures!

*****

It is one of America-centered apps, but my experience with 50 US States and US Presidents was positive. Some of photos in the app are my own, others are taken from the nps.gov website. It’s handy that every picture done by the US government employee is in public domain. This app makes me want to visit all those parks I haven’t seen yet. My count is 22/59 so far.

Brazilian States

What do you know about Brazil? The football (soccer) World Cup, the Rio carnival, the Amazon river but it’s unlikely that you know names of the Brazilian States, unless you lived in Brazil. Nevertheless, Brazil is a growing market and a significant percentage of my revenue comes from Brazilian users. Upcoming World Cup and Olympic Games (Rio 2016) would attract the world’s attention to this country and my decision to create an app about its region is not very surprising. I plan it as a touchstone that will show me if this kind of apps is worth making. Of course, it is localized into Portuguese and I expect at least 75% of overall installs and revenue from Brazil itself. But it is a great opportunity for all of us to learn more about “B” in BRICS.

The English description of the game is the following:

Learn all 26 States of Brazil (+ a Federal District):
* names
* maps
* capitals
* flags

*****
Both Brazilian States and Australia and Oceania apps experienced some problems with appearing on the App Store. It took them more than 24 hours to appear in the listing after they were Ready for Sale. The reason is unknown, but I’m happy that they are finally here for you to enjoy and learn.

Australia and Oceania

Today I finish my series of apps about the World geography. Australia and Oceania is the last region with independent countries. Please check my apps about European Countries, American Countries, Asian Countries, and African Countries.

The English description of the game is the following:

This app combines 2 important geographic topics:
– 6 States and 2 Territories of Australia and
– 14 independent countries and islands in Oceania, including New Zealand, Fiji and many others.
Learn them all!
* flags
* capitals
* maps

*****
Countries of Oceania is an obscure topic. Besides Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, they are tiny islands and people know very little about them. And there are not so many of them, just 14 independent states, so I added States of Australia as the second mode. Thus this app is also a contribution to my new series about administrative division of major countries.

Canadian Provinces

Since the good topics in the international geography ran out, I stepped down from the global to the regional level. My new app is about Canadian Provinces and Terrritories. There are just 10 provinces and 3 territories in Canada, not many to create a big quiz with a great number of questions. And yes, I’m well aware that apps like this may be popular in just one country. But Canada itself is quite a large audience, and even if this app is not successful, it was easy for me to prepare and I learned a lot of new info myself.

The English description of the game is the following:

This app tests your knowledge and helps you learn the names, the maps, the capitals, and the flags of all 10 Canadian provinces and 3 territories.

Can you find the British Columbia on the map of Canada? You will be able to after downloading this app!
